✍️ Deep Dive: The Right Mentor Can Change Everything—Here’s How to Find One
No one figures it all out alone.
✔️ Steve Jobs had Bill Campbell (Business coach & "Coach of Silicon Valley")
✔️ Oprah had Maya Angelou (Lifelong mentor in personal growth and storytelling)
✔️ Michael Jordan had Phil Jackson (Head coach who guided him to six NBA championships)
✔️ Tony Robbins had Jim Rohn (Early mentor in personal development and business coaching)
If mentorship was essential for them, why wouldn’t it be for you?
Yet, most people never actively seek mentors.
Some wait for one to show up (it won’t).
Some think they don’t need one (they do).
Some assume mentorship is only for beginners (wrong).
If you’re not learning from people ahead of you, you’re choosing a harder path.
📌 The 3 Types of Mentors You Need
If you think one mentor is enough.
It’s not.
To grow faster and smarter, you need three types of mentors:
1️⃣ The Experience Mentor (Someone ahead of you)
✔️ They’ve already been where you want to go.
✔️ They help you avoid mistakes you don’t even know exist yet.
✔️ They share unwritten rules that no book will ever teach you.
💡 Example: A senior leader who gives you insights on navigating promotions, leadership, and high-level decision-making.
2️⃣ The Peer Mentor (Someone alongside you)
✔️ They keep you accountable and challenge your excuses.
✔️ They share real-time insights as they grow alongside you.
✔️ They remind you you’re not alone.
💡 Example: A high-performing friend or colleague who pushes you to level up.
3️⃣ The Reverse Mentor (Someone behind you)
✔️ They give fresh perspectives you might overlook.
✔️ They challenge outdated thinking.
✔️ They help you stay connected to new ideas and emerging trends.
💡 Example: A junior colleague or someone from a different generation who helps you see the world from a different angle.
Most people only focus on mentors ahead of them.
If you don’t have all three types, you’re missing key perspectives.
📌 The best part? Mentorship doesn’t have to be formal.
🚀 Some of the most valuable mentorships happen informally—through a conversation, a shared lesson, or a quick piece of advice.
💡 Whether structured or casual, what matters most is who you surround yourself with and how you apply what you learn.
📌 How to Attract the Right Mentors (Without Being Annoying)
🚨 Most people fail at finding mentors because they approach it the wrong way.
They either never ask… or they ask poorly.
1️⃣ Be valuable before you ask for value.
❌ Wrong: “Hey, can you mentor me?”
✅ Right: “I read your work and applied X—here’s what I learned.”
📌 Why? People love to help action-takers. Show them you’re serious.
2️⃣ Make it easy to say yes.
❌ Wrong: “Can I pick your brain for an hour?”
✅ Right: “Would love your quick thoughts on X—2 min read.”
📌 Why? Busy people don’t have time for vague requests. Make it clear, simple, and low-effort.
3️⃣ Follow up with action.
❌ Wrong: Asking for advice, doing nothing, and vanishing.
✅ Right: Taking action on their advice, then sharing results.
📌 Why? If you don’t show results, why would they keep investing in you?
Mentors don’t invest in people who don’t take action.
📌 The #1 Mentor Mistake That Holds People Back
The biggest mistake? Waiting.
🚫 “I’ll find a mentor when I’m more experienced.”
🚫 “I’ll reach out when I feel ready.”
🚫 “Someone will eventually recognize my potential.”
Reality check: No one’s coming to save you.
The best mentors choose people who are already taking action.
✔️ Send that message.
✔️ Join that community.
✔️ Ask that question.
Your next mentor isn’t far away. But you have to make the first move.
