A friend invited me to be a guest on his podcast.
Halfway through, he asked a question - and my first thought was, “I don’t know.”
But I didn’t want to say that.
How would I sound? Would it make me look unprepared?
So I winged it. My version of “trying anyway,” haha.
It wasn’t terrible… but it wasn’t great either.
And that’s when it clicked - pretending to know doesn’t build trust.
Admitting you don’t know does.
💬 Why “I Don’t Know” Builds Credibility
When you say “I don’t know,” you’re not showing weakness - you’re showing courage.
You’re choosing transparency over ego.
You’re telling people, “I care more about the truth than about looking right.”
That’s credibility.
And credibility compounds faster than confidence ever will.
🧭 How to Get Clarity Without Certainty
You don’t need every answer to lead - you just need a process people can rely on.
Try this simple four-step framework next time things feel unclear:
1️⃣ State the Facts
Start with what you know for sure right now.
2️⃣ Name the Gap
Be honest about what’s missing - and what’s at risk if you guess.
3️⃣ Set a date
Tell people when you’ll be back with an update (even if it’s “no change”).
4️⃣ Follow up
Once you know, share what changed.
That’s how trust gets built - through consistency.
