Have You Ever Wondered What Truly Sets Great Leaders Apart?
Leadership isn’t just about holding a position of power—it’s about inspiring and guiding others toward a shared goal. While one blog post can’t cover everything about leadership, this one will offer valuable principles that you can start applying today.
Leadership in Action: Lessons from Experience
Throughout my career, I’ve led teams in diverse settings—from rugged oilfields to high-pressure logistics and transportation operations. Whether leading small teams or overseeing organizations of 500+ people, I’ve learned that leadership isn’t about a title—it’s about action, empathy, and consistency.
People Follow What You Do, Not What You Say
One of the most important leadership lessons I’ve learned is this: people don’t do what you say—they do what they see.
During a particularly tough oilfield project, I made it a point to work alongside my team, tackling the same challenging tasks. My presence and willingness to share the workload not only built trust but also boosted morale and productivity.
💡 Lesson: Leading by example isn’t just a leadership cliché—it’s a powerful motivator.
Leadership Presence: The Balance Between Approachability & Authority
Leadership presence isn’t just about showing up—it’s about how you show up. It’s about staying calm under pressure, being clear in your expectations, and setting the tone for your team.
Example: During a high-pressure period in e-commerce logistics, I made it a point to regularly check in with my team to understand their challenges. But I also held them accountable for meeting our objectives. This balance helped maintain trust and respect without sacrificing performance.
💡 Lesson: Being approachable doesn’t mean being a pushover. You can be supportive while still setting firm expectations.
Protecting and Empowering Your Team
A great leader protects their team from external pressures while also empowering them to grow.
🔹 Protection: In one of my roles, I had to push back against upper management to prevent my team from being overwhelmed with unrealistic demands.
🔹 Empowerment: I made it a priority to give team members the chance to take on leadership responsibilities, step back, and let them lead initiatives.
💡 Lesson: The greatest leaders create more leaders, not just followers.
Essential Leadership Skills and How to Develop Them
Great leadership isn’t about innate talent—it’s a skillset you can develop. Here’s how:

Clear communication fosters understanding and collaboration. Empathy helps you connect with your team on a deeper level.
🔹 Development Tip: Improve communication skills by practicing concise delivery and active listening. Dare to Lead by Brené Brown is a great resource on this.

6. Continuous Learning
Leadership is a journey, not a destination.
🔹 Development Tip: Read The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni and stay updated on leadership strategies.
